Harriet was the third child of William Read and Harriet nee Ward and her siblings were Mary Anne, Thomas Henry, James, Elizabeth, Peter, William and Sarah Anne. About the age of 18, Harriet was married to William Pink who was a soldier with the army, and was stationed in India when he died in Allahabad in December 1852, leaving her to raise their two children, Mary Ann and James Thomas, alone. Fortunately she met Edward King and they married in March 1854 and had nine children together with the youngest born in 1872. They and many extended family members came out to New Zealand in the mid 1870s to make a new life in a new land. Harriet's family with Edward was Harriet 1855-1918, Edward 1857-1932, William 1860-1918, Charles 1862-1889, John 1864-1939, Harold 1866-1918, Mercy 1867-1943, Tracey 1869-1948 and Friend Alexander 1872-11 April 1874 (perished on the William Davie en route for New Zealand). Harriet lived for nine years after Edward's death and both were buried in Woodlands Cemetery.
